On Tuesday January 6, 2009 the City Council will give final consideration to a proposed parking lot to serve the Senior Center in Mitchell Park in downtown San Luis Obispo.
Background
The proposed parking lot for the Senior Center in Mitchell Park is one of the most hotly-debated issues to hit the SLO City Council for many years. Although the previous Council had approved a parking lot design and gone out to bid for its construction, they decided in their last meeting November 18 to permit our Council to reconsider this project and decide whether to go forward with it. This page will provide you with background information and a record of the documents that have helped me to make up my mind on the need for a compromise design.
Origin of Compromise Proposal for Reduced Parking Lot
On Saturday, November 22, 2008 I held the first of two meetings at Mitchell Park with various invited members of the community, including those both for and against the proposed parking lot. To read my memo that records the outcome of that meeting, click here.
Ashbaugh's Remarks
At the Council meeting on December 2, 2008 approximately 30 members of the public testified about the proposed parking lot. Following the public testimony I delivered a statement asserting my position.
